Light therapy against the winter depression

Light therapy is a recognised method of treating winter depression and relieving spring fatigue. It is like an artificial sun which influences the body’s biological day/night rhythm and regulates the level of serotonin – the well-being hormone.

Tiredness, lack of energy, mood swings, drowsiness and increased appetite in autumn and winter are all symptoms which can be relieved through light therapy. The fact that these symptoms occur during the darker times of year may be connected to problems in regulating the level of the hormone melatonin in your body, which also tends to be higher than normal during the day. Light therapy helps to reduce the production of this hormone during the day and will leave you feeling more cheery. The light used in the procedure slows production of melatonin in the brain, thus reducing drowsiness and mood swings.

Light therapy is also very helpful if you suffer from sleep disturbances caused by jet lag and working at night.

In order to gain the maximum benefit from the therapy, it is recommended that you take a daily course lasting from 1-3 weeks which may then be repeated 1-2 months later. The course of treatment is most effective as a prophylactic.

Please note: Since light is absorbed via the retina, you must look directly at the light source for a few seconds every minute.

Duration: 30 minutes

You should not undergo this procedure if you are suffering from glaucoma, an acute or chronic eye infection or retina or lens complaints (or if you lack lenses). You should also avoid the treatment if you are taking medicines which are contraindicated in relation to light therapy (photosensitive preparations such as chloroquine, lithium and fluoxetine), tetracycline preparations, Daonil, Euglucon, Glibenese, Klorproman, Klorpromazin, Largactil, Melizid, Melleril, Mindiab, Neotigason, Orsanil, Rastinon, Roaccutan or Semi-Eugluco.
